English below – (ju) Es gibt Momente im Leben, in denen ich wirklich dankbar für Werbung bin. Neulich zum Beispiel, als Instagram mir beim sinnlosen Durchblättern von Stories ungefragt eine Ad vor den Latz knallte, die ihre AIDA-Wirkung nicht verfehlte. Was für ein Sound, was für eine Präsenz! Wie elektrisiert klickte ich auf das Profil der Band und staunte nicht schlecht. Ein Duo aus Panama City, lediglich bewaffnet mit Gitarre und Schlagzeug, das im Gegensatz zu den White Stripes tatsächlich aus zwei blutsverwandten Geschwistern besteht und den beim Aussprechen zweideutigen Namen AlphaWhores trägt. (Ein Schelm, wer hier nicht zuerst an das Pferd denkt.) 

Obwohl es die Kombo erst seit 2021 gibt und „AlphaWhores I“ ihr Erstlingswerk ist, merkt man sofort, dass hier keine Amateure am Start sind. Juan Carlos García de Paredes und seine Schwester Massiel Pinzón sind ein perfekt eingespieltes und extrem harmonisierendes Team, das sich sowohl gesanglich als auch an den Instrumenten im fliegenden Wechsel die Klinke in die Hand gibt. Auf hohem Niveau fahren die beiden Multiinstrumentalisten eine massive, raue Wand auf aus Stoner und Alternative Metal, durchzogen von dreckigem Grunge-Mörtel und kantigen Off-Beat-Brocken.

Schon der Opener „Same Team“ überzeugt mit knarziger Gitarre und mächtig Druck auf Fellen und Becken vom Fleck weg und löst unweigerlich eine gewisse Alice-in-Chains-Wehmut aus. Bruder und Schwester wechseln sich in bittersüßen Gesangsmelodien ab und bilden auch zweistimmig eine höchst effektive Symbiose. Mit tragischer Eindringlichkeit geht es in „Trash That Takes Itself Out“ weiter, ein triolisches Meisterwerk mit verspieltem, beckenlastigen Schlagzeug, gefolgt von dem rhythmisch abwechslungsreicheren „Raw Nerve“, dessen Chorus im wahrsten Sinne reinhaut. 

Die ersten drei Songs sind mit die stärksten auf dem Album und wurden seit Juni 2023 peu a peu auf Spotify veröffentlicht, ebenso wie der Ohrwurm-Anwärter „I Can Manage“ – Warnung vor erneuter AiC-Nostalgie-Attacke! – und „GTO“, das von zwei erstklassigen Harmonika-Soli von Gastmusiker Billy Herron eingerahmt wird und dessen Refrain eine tragisch-schöne Gesangsmelodie bereithält. Es ist vor allem der raue, rotzige Groove, den AlphaWhores auszeichnet und der sich immer wieder Bahn bricht, so auch am Ende des Albums, etwa in den Strophen von „Days Of Sin“ und im Chorus des vorletzten Tracks „The Witches Told Me“. 

Sowohl „Same Team“ als auch „Raw Nerve“ wurden in der erfolgreichen brasilianischen Radioshow „Pegadas de Andreas Kisser“ gelobt, die von Andres Kisser, dem Gitarristen und Gründer von Sepultura, moderiert wird. Im September letzten Jahres schoss „Same Team“ auf Platz 1 in den Hypeddit Metal Charts und hält sich dort bis heute (Stand: 21.01.2024) unter den Top 10!

Mit AlphaWhores hat das kreative Geschwister-Duo ein bestens durchdachtes Gesamtkonzept erschaffen, bei dem alles stimmt, angefangen beim Sound, Songwriting und einer überzeugenden Produktion über Bandlogo und Musikvideos bis hin zur Bandinfo, dem umgangssprachlichen „Waschzettel“, der in einem kreativen Design sämtliche Rezensentinnen und Rezensenten entzücken wird. Wie bereits erwähnt: Man merkt, dass hier keine Amateure am Werk sind. Juan Carlos ist ein künstlerisches Multitalent: Als Multiinstrumentalist und Produzent gehört ihm das mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnete Studio und Indie-Plattenlabel Editoris. Außerdem ist er Schauspieler, Filmregisseur und kreativer Leiter verschiedener Comedy-Sketch-Projekte. Seine Schwester Massiel leitete u.a. als Schlagzeugerin in den späten Neunzigern die erste reine Frauen-Rockband ihres Landes, studierte in England Musikproduktion, Songwriting und Performance, arbeitete als Rockjournalistin für die wichtigste panamaische Zeitung „La Prensa“ und war Präsidentin der „Fundación Rockistmo“, einer gemeinnützigen Organisation, die zur Förderung der Rockkultur in Panama gegründet wurde. Es ist diese geballte Ladung Leidenschaft zweier Menschen, die man auf „AlphaWhores I“ zu hören und genießen bekommt. 

Humor beweisen die beiden auch: Der Bandname geht zurück auf ein süßes, argentinisches Gebäck namens „Alfajores“, das amerikanisch ausgesprochen wie „AlphaWhores“ klingt. Ich sag‘ ja: Ein Schelm, wer hier nicht zuerst an das Pferd denkt.

„AlphaWhores I“ erscheint am morgigen 26. Januar digital auf den gängigen Streaming-Plattformen und ab Mitte Februar auch auf Vinyl, erhältlich auf editoris.com.

There are moments in life in which I am really grateful for advertising. The other day, for example, when Instagram threw an unsolicited ad at me while I was mindlessly scrolling through my stories, which didn’t fail its AIDA effect. What a sound, what a presence! Electrified, I clicked on the band’s profile and was amazed. A duo from Panama City, armed only with a guitar and drums, which, unlike the White Stripes, actually consists of two blood-related siblings and bears the ambiguous name AlphaWhores. (A prankster who doesn’t think of the horse first).

Despite the fact that the combo has only been around since 2021 and „AlphaWhores I“ is their debut album, it is obvious straight away that they are no amateurs. Juan Carlos García de Paredes and his sister Massiel Pinzón are a perfectly attuned and extremely harmonizing team who take turns singing and playing instruments. At a high level, the two multi-instrumentalists build up a massive, rough wall of stoner and alternative metal, interspersed with dirty grunge mortar and edgy off-beat chunks.

The opener „Same Team“ convinces right from the start with its creaky guitar and powerful pressure on the skins and cymbals and inevitably triggers a certain Alice in Chains melancholy. Brother and sister alternate in bittersweet vocal melodies and also form a highly effective symbiosis in two voices. The tragic urgency continues in „Trash That Takes Itself Out„, a triolic masterpiece with playful, cymbal-heavy drums, followed by the rhythmically more varied „Raw Nerve„, whose chorus really hits home.

The first three songs are among the strongest on the album and have been released on Spotify bit by bit since June 2023, as has the earworm candidate „I Can Manage“ – warning of another AiC nostalgia attack! – and „GTO„, which is framed by two first-class harmonica solos by guest musician Billy Herron and whose chorus features a tragically beautiful vocal melody. Above all, it is the raw, snotty groove that characterizes AlphaWhores and which repeatedly breaks through, for example at the end of the album, in the verses of „Days Of Sin“ and in the chorus of the penultimate track „The Witches Told Me„.

Both „Same Team“ and „Raw Nerve“ were praised on the successful Brazilian radio show „Pegadas de Andreas Kisser“, hosted by Andres Kisser, guitarist and founder of Sepultura. In September last year, „Same Team“ shot to number 1 in the Hypeddit Metal Charts and remains in the top 10 to this day (as of 21.01.2024)!

With AlphaWhores, the creative sibling duo has created a well thought-out overall concept in which everything is just right, from the sound, songwriting and convincing production to the band logo and music videos to the band info, the colloquial „washing slip“, which will delight all reviewers with its creative design. As already mentioned, you can tell that there are no amateurs at work here. Juan Carlos is a multi-talented artist: As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, he owns the Grammy-winning studio and indie record label Editoris. He is also an actor, film director and creative director of various comedy sketch projects. His sister Massiel led the first all-female rock band in her country as a drummer in the late nineties, studied music production, songwriting and performance in England, worked as a rock journalist for the most important Panamanian newspaper „La Prensa“ and was president of the „Fundación Rockistmo“, a non-profit organization founded to promote rock culture in Panama. It is this concentrated load of passion from two people that you can hear and enjoy on „AlphaWhores I“.

They also show a good sense of humor: The band’s name goes back to a sweet Argentinian pastry called „Alfajores“, which sounds like „AlphaWhores“ when pronounced in American English. As I said: A prankster who doesn’t think of the horse first.
